Foods Give Life

Muffin in boy’s mouth. Taken outside on Cavalero Field.

Boy taking a bite of a muffin. Taken in the Chem Lab.

Q1 How did you choose the specific types of food for each portrait? What is their significance? Explain – be specific! (3 sentences min.)

I chose a muffin for both pictures because muffins are a food I hold dear to me. I always start off my day with a muffin, no what what type. So, for this project, I chose to focus on both muffins.

Q2 Consider the lighting in your photographs. What was the light source in each of your photos? What time of day? How did it affect the mood and atmosphere of the portraits? Explain – be specific!  (3 sentences min.)

Both of my photos were taken during the day. However, one was taken outside, and one was taken inside using artificial lighting. The picture outside has a different mood because of the natural lighting and the one taken inside has a more cozy feeling because of the artificial lighting.

Q3 Think about the composition of your photos. Name the composition technique you used for each photo. Why did you choose to crop your photos as shown? Be specific! (3 sentences min.)

In the first picture, there is a boy standing outside with a muffin in his mouth, I used symmetry in this photo. In the picture of the boy taking a bite of the muffin in the Chem Lab, I used the fill-the-frame rule. Both of these rules of composition make the picture better and more pleasant to look at.

Q4 How do the colors and color splash technique in your photographs contribute to the overall impact of the images? Why did you choose to mask the specific areas in color for each photo? Be specific!  (3 sentences min.)

The color and color splash technique that I used gave more attention to the food. The food was the focus of the picture and making it the only colored thing highlighted it. Making everything else black and white adds mystery to the picture and helps highlight the focus on the food.

Q5 Consider the technical aspects of your photography, such as focus (lens size 75-300(lg) or 18-35(reg), or iPhone mode/focus), depth of field (blurry background), and exposure (value in PS adjustment of your black, grays, whites). How did you use these techniques to enhance your images? Be specific! (3 sentences min.)

These things made my image more creative. It also gives more detail to the picture. The blurry and black and white background specifically adds more focus to the colorful food.

Q6 What advice would you give to next year’s students for shooting food portraits? Be specific! (3 sentences min.)

I would say that you have to take your time when taking and editing the picture. Make sure that you are creative and choose good food for the shoot. Lastly, I would pay attention to the composition techniques and utilize them.
